Why are the sustainability goals important?
Global Reach
These goals aiming for more sustainable development were created by the United Nations and are being worked on worldwide.
Accountability
Each year, the UN Secretary General presents an annual SDG Progress report. This is made in cooperation with the UN System. It is full of data from national statistical systems and information gathered from a regional level. This helps track what progress is truly being made and where there are areas for improvement.
Specific Targets
Each goal has a multitude of specific targets. This makes each goal more attainable due to its clear and reachable smaller targets. These specific targets focus on very specific issues different parts of the world are facing, and altogether fall under larger goals that will help fight climate change and improve the world.
Clear Timeline
These Sustainable Development Goals are meant to be completed by 2030. However, some targets of the 17 goals have not been updated and were not completed in their originally planned time. For example, some targets still say they aim to achieve something by 2020. Despite this, the goals as a whole have a timeline in which things should be accomplished. This will hopefully help push government to comply and enact real change.
